Bill Smith

Bill born near Edinburgh in Scotland in 1957 and moved to Tasmania with his wife and two daughters in 1981. Since then he has lived in Launceston.

In 1992, after four years of full time study at the Launceston campus, he attained a Bachelor of Social Work with Honours from the University of Tasmania.

Between 1993 and 1998 Bill was the Manager at the Launceston Community Legal Centre.


During this same period Bill was involved with a number of government and non-government organisations, State and National, on various Boards and Committees. This included a number of years as a Commissioner on the Legal Aid Commission of Tasmania and as Convener of the Tasmanian Association of Community Legal Centres. Between 1994 and 1998 he occupied a variety of positions on the Board of the Tasmanian Council of Social Services (TasCOSS), including Vice President and President and was a Board member on the Australian Council of Social Services (ACOSS).

In 1998 Bill moved to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and, from 2000 to 2004 was Statewide Manager of DHHS Child Youth and Family Support. Bill has been the Manager of DHHS Custodial Youth Justice at Ashley Youth Detention Centre since 2004.
