Headspace celebrates successful five years

By JODIE STEPHENS | The Examiner | Jan. 17, 2014, 1 a.m.

HEADSPACE Launceston saw its fifth birthday yesterday as another opportunity to promote its mental health service.

Centre staff stationed themselves at the Cataract Gorge with a sausage sizzle, cupcakes and beanbags, in an effort to raise awareness among people aged between 12 and 25.

Cornerstone Youth Services chief executive Cate Sinclair, who runs the free service, said an increasing number of people had sought help since 2009, with the centre delivering 20,000 occasions of service.

Ms Sinclair said this reflected a reduced stigma around mental health and seeking help.

She said the issues that affected young people remained much the same, with bullying, anxiety, self harm and depression common issues.

However, she said screen addiction was becoming an increasing problem.

"Kids are naming up that they can't live without their iPhones, or their screens; that's something that's certainly coming out a little bit more," she said.
