Young Tasmanian’s smoking, drinking, just not listening

Do you drink to get drunk? What about your children, do you know what they're drinking or how much? Tasmania's young people qualify as having some of the country's highest rates of smoking and high risk drinking.

In an attempt to combat the rise in drinking and smoking amongst our young people, Tasmania Medicare Local has teamed up with Cornerstone Youth Mental Health Services to work on a three year project using social media to target young people.

Sarah Gillman sat down with Cate Sinclair the CEO of Cornerstone Mental Health Services to find out why the message isn't getting through to our teens.

Cate told Sarah... "If you have a look at normal traditional television ratings, you have a look at the lower readership of newspapers by young people and what resonates with them, it's really the less traditional media- well it is traditional now- as in the social media, that seems to connect better with them in the language that they're used to understanding.

"So you know, the branded TV ads that go to air nationally, the plain packaging initiative, all of those types of initiatives that have been specifically created to help drive down the rates of smoking certainly aren't resonating with our young people because almost a third of our statewide 12-25 year olds are taking up the habit, which is way above the National average. So, that would indicate that that sort of communication that's occuring in your normal above the line media isn't working for them."
